If you are looking for a time capsule or museum piece car please look elsewhere. If, however, you are seeking an iconic 2002 that has sensible upgrades and can be driven with confidence in modern traffic, and literally draws comments, smiles, and photo ops from the random public whenever on the road or in a parking lot or gas station, please read on.
I was unable to confidently trace ownership but believe I am 4th owner. PO had car for over 40 years, and was downsizing his collection. I’ve had the car for just over a year and my focus has been primarily mechanical, believing that above all else the car should be safe and operational first. This car is meant to be driven and enjoyed.
Engine is very strong, with a new BMW unit installed at 90k miles (see pics for documentation). Roughly 26k on engine; current mileage shows 116.5K. Comp ratios 1=170, 2=168, 3= 169, 4=170. Car idles quietly at 1250rpm.Checkout the cold start video, usually starts on first turn. Likes to warm for a minute before driving.
Has a magnetic oil plug; currently using 10w40 Castrol Edge synthetic.
Weber 32/36 carb, cleaned and tuned. Pertronix ignition w/ 8mm wires. Electric fuel pump. Free flow Ansa exhaust with 4-2-1 header.
The car was converted to a 5 Speed Getrag 240 transmission from a 320i. Clutch and gearbox feel sound, all gears engage well. 5 speed makes big difference on interstate. 75 mph turns only 3k revs.
The interior needs matched upholstery, but the original pieces and Flofit seats are in good condition. The rear seat conversion to 1987 e24 635csi buckets and e28 seat belts is done well with secure seats and fitted rear panel. The rear seats are comfortable but worn. With the interior upgrades and changes finding consistent color match for the various pieces can be a problem. After some research, potential solve suggested is thru Zoomzoomzoom-ing in Gardenia CA who has correct pattern for the Flofit seats and the various years of BMW pieces represented in the interior. The Flofits aren’t as attractive (or quite as expensive) as Recaros but these are in good working shape and comfortable for a variety of body shapes and sizes, something that Recaros lack. The center arm rest console is a custom piece from FMS in CA and mimcs a ’93 Honda Civic console. I was ambivalent to it at first but have to say the more I drive the car the more convenient it seems to become. Carpet looks ok but is mediocre and old. Dash is just OK, has a single crack near the right side of the instrument cluster that that the PO did some type of visible repair to but it is at least out of line of sight. There is dash cover included if you choose to use. Windows seal shut with no leaks. Windshield is aging and should be replaced but presents no concern to the drivability of the car. Vent windows and rear quarter glass work well. Windows are tinted dark which helps with FL sun heating up the greenhouse. The weather stripping is generally in good condition. Nardi Personal steering wheel.
This pic did not translate to the site well, color seems a bit off. See gallery pics for better view.
The body seems exceptionally straight for its age. No signs or indications of any accidents or frame repairs. Panel gaps are consistent. Car was painted 10 years ago, and time is nigh for a respray as some light rust in the lower panels and decklid edge are visible; easy fixes when painting. There was some rust in the passenger front floorboard so it was replaced. I regret not taking a pic first; my welder offered to do a small simple patch but I opted for replacing all. There is a fist size rust hole in the lower front valance, easily the worst part of the entire car. To remedy, I’ve supplied a new lower panel from Jaymic that can be applied when the car is painted. Also supplied with the car are (new) fender flares. Pedal box and spare tire well are clean and solid. Chrome and trim are all straight and present well. Door locks are not original to the car and do not operate well; the PO apparently swapped then out but did not clean or rebuild. I have not yet taken the time remedy as the doors themselves work fine and open and close with solid safe action. Kamei front and rear spoilers. A car cover is also included.
Turn signals, dash lights, courtesy lights all work. Wipers work…two speeds (slow, and less slow!) but are effective…have driven the car in hard rain w/o problems. Headlights are upgrades to H4 and work very well. Front turn signals converted to European flush mount style. Blower fan does not work. A/C was converted to R134 and uses a Sanden compressor. Air works and blows cold.
Battery has been relo'd to trunk.
Decamber plates and strut tower bar; factory springs retained. Urethane bushings, 22F/19R sway bars, KYB shocks.
Volvo front rotors w/ stainless steel lines. Volvo 240 ‘84 – ‘93 pads.
Upgraded 19mm rear wheel cylinders; keep if switching to 320i rear drums. 3.64 open Diff; 11 40.
14" Enkei wheels w/ spacer and longer wheel stud / lug nut conversion.
New Goodyear 185/65 tires with Sept 2021 date codes. New Hancook spare on original 13” rim.
Morning wake up. My daughter cut the video a bit quick but you get the idea. The car idles just under 1k until it warms.
Revs easy immediately though.
My son's go pro making some weird noises, sorry!.
You may want to put it on mute.
Again with the go pro noise (our Scuba diving one) Sounds like we are underwater. Hopefully you can at least tell that it sounds smooth like a normal car. The Ansa exhaust adds some character. Drive by, three point turn and return.
1st thru 4th gear, lazy 0-50 takeoff from residential turn lane access.
My 11 year old son is shooting the video. He's loves riding in the car and wants to be "seen" in it by his friends who also seem fascinated with it. The allure of these cars spans to the current generation.
Another 1st thru 4th; top speed was 55. Tried to capture the speedo but was not successful. Windows are down, was great day for a drive. I set the initial alignment with two plumb bobs and a piece of chalk, something my Dad taught me when I first learned to drive. Don't get to use that skill much these days! You can see a blank plate I put in the dash to cover the Seat Belt Alarm. I've since put the Alarm box back but it is not connected.
I75 South in FL; 75 mph and we are almost the slowest car on the road!!
It's OK, this 2002 can go fast enough to keep up. I did this video to illustrate the difference the 5 speed makes, picking up nearly 15 mph more than same revs in 4th gear, and quieter of course. Yes I should not be letting go of the steering wheel. Just wanted to show how steady the car is even at speed. Not in the video, another driver followed us off the interstate to compliment and ask about the BMW. That happens alot.
